Master Puppy Training Techniques

Puppies need guidance to grow into well-behaved, happy dogs.

The good news? Is quite simple once you've understood and mastered doggie's language. With the right training tips, you can set your furry friend up for a lifetime of good habits and joyful companionship. Let’s dive into some practical, easy-to-follow techniques that will make training a breeze and strengthen the bond between you and your puppy.

Training Your Puppy

Puppies learn everything between 8 and 16 weeks old. This is the perfect window to teach them what’s expected and what’s not. If you do the training right during this stage, you can save thousands on behaviour modification, which takes way more time, patience and money.

This is what happened during this period:

  • Trust and communication: You and your puppy will learn to understand and trust each other.

  • Prevents bad habits: It’s easier to teach good behaviour.

  • Boosts confidence: With clear structure, balance and rules, puppies feel safe, secure and confident.

  • Strengthens your bond: Training is a shared activity that deepens your connection.

Always keep in mind

  1. Training sessions need to be short, maximum 5-10 minute sessions, a few times a day. End training always on a high note.

  2. Joy and fun will boost the results. The proper motivations (toys, treats or praises) will increase your puppy's confidence, thus achieving the expected behaviour sooner. You have 5 seconds to indicate the right behaviour to your puppy.

  3. Be consistent with commands and rules. Use the same words and gestures for commands. Make sure everyone in the household follows the same rules to avoid confusing your puppy.

  4. Socialise your puppy early. Introduce your puppy to different people, places, and other animals in a controlled way. This helps them become confident and well-adjusted.

  5. Designate your puppy's safe space in your home. This place is where your puppy will probably sleep and/ or have alone time. This is essential for a good development of your puppy's personality.

  6. Start house training immediately

Take your puppy outside frequently, especially after eating, drinking, or waking up. Praise them when they go in the right spot.

These tips are simple but powerful. They set the stage for a happy, well-behaved dog.

How to Discipline a Puppy for Unwanted Behaviour?

Discipline doesn’t mean punishment. It’s about teaching your puppy what behaviour is acceptable and what isn’t. Here’s how to handle those moments:

  • Redirect unwanted behaviour: If your puppy is biting or chewing something they shouldn’t, gently redirect them to a toy. Praise them when they switch.

  • Use a firm but calm voice: Say “No” or “Ah-ah” in a clear, calm tone. AVOID using their name in these situations.

  • Ignore attention-seeking bad behaviour. This is one of the hardest thing humans needs to do. Turn away and ignore them until they calm down. They will test your limits, but here is where you need to be strong and don't give up to their demands, like jumping up or barking excessively.

  • Time-outs can help. If your puppy is overly excited, a brief time-out in their crate or a quiet room can help them settle.

  • Be patient and consistent. Mistakes WILL happen because puppies are learning. BE PATIENCE and keep your training gentle and consistent, and they will improve.

Remember, discipline is about guidance, not fear. Your puppy needs your support to learn the right way.
